Prime minister Shri Narendra Modi interacted with India’s Commonwealth Games Champions. The Prime Minister observed the transforming landscape of Indian sports over the past decade, highlighting that receiving national sportspersons at his residence has been a regular and cherished tradition throughout his 12 to 13-year tenure. He affirmed that the dedicated efforts and sustained successes of Indian athletes in securing continuous victories for the country inspire young school students far more effectively than routine promotional advice. “Your medal inspires them more than anything we could say by going to schools,” remarked Shri Modi.

The Prime Minister interacted with an athlete who recalled a prior commitment regarding her daughters taking up sports, following up on her progress and receiving an assurance that her daughters would bring home three medals in the upcoming Commonwealth Games. He warmly validated her confidence and encouraged her commitment to excellence.

The Prime Minister recognized the deep emotional journey of the athletes, remarking on the perseverance of a player who dedicated a victory achieved on Guru Purnima to his coach, and another athlete who broke into tears on the podium after overcoming four years of persistent injuries and personal hardships to see the National Flag raised. He noted that such national triumphs transcend individual achievements to become an enduring source of inspiration for future generations. “This victory of yours becomes a very big inspiration for the coming generations,” affirmed Shri Modi.

The Prime Minister discussed the growing respect and fear commanded by Indian athletes on the international circuit, noting that global competitors now feel intimidated when drawn against Indian opponents. He specifically highlighted the rising stature of Indian boxers and acknowledged the feedback from athletes regarding the transformative role played by grassroots initiatives like the Khelo India Scheme and back-to-back competition support provided by the government. “World players have now started fearing these boxers too,” remarked Shri Modi.

The Prime Minister emphasized the core philosophy behind sports promotion, stating that athletes must continue to maintain the humble spirit of a young learner while expanding the prestige of the Khelo India initiative. He added that true national sports success depends not merely on physical infrastructure, but on building a comprehensive sports culture across the nation. “Sports infrastructure is one thing, but the country achieves medals when a sports culture is built in the country,” stated Shri Modi.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the patriotism of an Indian Army athlete who defeated his Pakistani opponent 5-0 on Kargil Vijay Diwas and dedicated his victory to the heroes of the Indian Army, remarking that such deep national pride adds extraordinary luster to athletic triumphs. He also shared lighthearted moments with an athlete recounting a humorous anecdote about his army coach, Narendra Rana, and the shared name “Narendra.” “You have not merely increased the number of medals; you have prepared a generation,” noted Shri Modi.

The Prime Minister praised an athlete who expressed gratitude to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for providing crucial training facilities to them, which enabled a transition from local sports centers to international podium finishes. “It is a matter of great honor for me; you did the hard work and remembered me, and I am very grateful to you,” remarked Shri Modi.

The Prime Minister made inquiries regarding the upgraded sports infrastructure across various regional hubs, including Varanasi and Bhopal, where athletes spent time training and visiting spiritual sites like Kashi Vishwanath and Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain. He commended the continuous support provided by the SAI and the Khelo India framework since its inception in 2018, which has helped young talent transition smoothly to elite competitive levels. “Rest assured, in the future too you will be victorious and once again we will meet right here,” stated Shri Modi.

The Prime Minister extended his warm wishes and blessings to a multi-time medalist who celebrated her birthday during the interaction, personally offering sweets to mark the occasion and encouraging all athletes to maintain their winning momentum with a positive outlook. He smiled and gave his blessings to the contingent for their continuous third consecutive medal-winning streak. “He who plays, blooms”, asserted Shri Modi.
