Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has urged the Centre to extend to 1,500 metric tonnes the onion inventory holding restrict for wholesale merchants within the state, who buy the important thing kitchen staple instantly from farmers.

In a letter written to Union Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Piyush Goyal on October 30, Mr Thackeray mentioned the wholesale merchants have stopped buying onion from farmers because of the very restricted inventory restrict of 25 metric tonnes.

“This has stalled the provision chain from farmers to shoppers, which has resulted in improve in costs of onion within the the retail market,” he mentioned.

“Arrival of kharif onion is more likely to start from the primary week of November. Kharif onion is very perishable. If this onion isn’t bought by merchants because of the current cap on inventory holding, farmers in Maharashtra will face large losses,” he added.

Within the final six months, onion farmers have already suffered because of the COVID-19 lockdown, the chief minister mentioned, and urged that the inventory restrict be elevated to 1,500 metric tonnes.

Mr Thackeray mentioned the restrict of 25 metric tonnes for wholesale merchants and two metric tonnes for retailers has brought on extreme hardships to onion farmers in addition to merchants.

Maharashtra is a number one producer of onion and it accounts for one third of the nation’s complete manufacturing, he added.

“The state accounts for 80 per cent of the onion exports from India. Within the final season, onion manufacturing was roughly 100 lakh metric tonnes,” Mr Thackeray mentioned.

“This 12 months, extra rainfall and flooding in main onion-producing states, together with Maharashtra, broken the standing kharif crop and led to extend in costs in September-October 2020,” he mentioned.
