Asif Ali Zardari, co-chair of the Pakistan People’s Party, defeated Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the nominee of the Sunni Ittehad Council, which was endorsed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, to become Pakistan’s fourteenth president on Saturday.
Mahmood Khan Achakzai received only 181 votes, while Asif Ali Zardari received 411.
Asif Ali Zardari, 68, is the father of former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and the spouse of the late Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led coalition government backed Asif Ali Zardari, the president from 2008 to 2013.
The new president would replace Arif Alvi, whose five-year term ended last year. However, Arif Alvi continued since the new electoral college was not yet formed.
Earlier in the day, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said Asif Ali Zardari, who is a presidential candidate, will once again become president.
In a post on X, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said, “Sardar bana that Zardari, phir sadar banega Zardari. Dam mast Qalandar Zardari.”
