Iron is essential to the body because it fuels haemoglobin, a type of protein found in red blood cells that aids in blood production. In turn, haemoglobin aids in the transfer of oxygen in the blood from the lungs to the tissues. Without enough iron in our blood, this process of oxygen transportation may suffer, leading to fatigue. Iron-deficiency anaemia, the most common type of anaemia, is caused by a lack of haemoglobin in your red blood cells.
Heavy menstruation in women, pregnancy, poor diet, or certain health conditions could lead to iron deficiency. Low iron levels in the body can cause tiredness, fatigue, shortness of breath, tingling in the feet, tongue pain or swelling, irregular heartbeat, brittle nails, and headaches.
While iron supplements are advised for those who are iron deficient, there are some simple home remedies that can help restore iron levels in your body.
