Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over 39,365 houses to homeless people as part of her government’s Ashrayan-2 project, which aims to provide housing for all people who are landless.
On Wednesday, the premier handed over the houses in the fourth phase of the project via a virtual program from her official residence, Ganabhaban.
She also declared seven districts and 159 upazilas to be homeless and landless-free, bringing the total number of such districts and upazilas to nine and 211, respectively.
Previously, the Prime Minister declared Panchagarh and Magura to be homeless and landless districts.
In the meantime, the total number of distributed houses under the project is currently 2,15,827.
Since the Ashrayan-2 project, dubbed the “Sheikh Hasina Model,” in inclusive development, project sites have been developed with an integrated approach that ensures all civic amenities, including electricity, drinking water, schools, mosques, graveyards, and cultivable land.
Since 1997, 771,301 families have been rehabilitated through the project.
There are 3,856,505 people who have been rehabilitated.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman launched the first homeless rehabilitation program in 1972.
