Bhavani Devi, India’s finest fencer, made history on Monday by winning bronze in the women’s sabre event at the Asian Fencing Championships.
This astounding performance signified India’s first continental medal.
In the quarterfinals of the women’s sabre event, Bhavani Devi upset the defending world champion and world No.1 Misaki Emura of Japan 15-10. It was also India’s first victory over Japan in four matches.
The 29-year-old settled for bronze following a close 15-14 semifinal loss against Uzbekistan’s world No.79 Zaynab Dayibekova.
Previously, the Indian fencer was given a first-round bye. She triumphed over World No.95. In the following round, Dospay Karina of Kazakhstan defeated world No.40 and third seed Seri Ozaki of Japan 15-11.
When she competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the 29-year-old became the first Indian fencer to represent her country.
