The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports’ intention to submit a bid to host the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2030 was accepted by the Union Cabinet, which is led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the event that the bid is accepted, the cabinet also approved the signing of the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA), the necessary grant-in-aid to the Gujarat government, and the necessary guarantees from the relevant ministries, departments, and agencies.
The Commonwealth Games will feature athletes from seventy-two nations. In addition, a significant number of athletes, coaches, technical officials, visitors, and media representatives will visit India during the Games, bringing in money and helping out local companies.
The Union cabinet further stated that Ahmedabad is an excellent host city, with world-class stadiums, cutting-edge training facilities, and a vibrant athletic culture. Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest stadium, has already proven its worth by successfully hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final.
A Commonwealth Sport delegation, led by Director of Games Darren Hall, recently visited Ahmedabad to assess planned venues and meet with Gujarat government officials. A larger delegation is scheduled to visit India.
“Beyond sports, hosting the CWG in India would leave a lasting impact boosting tourism, creating jobs and inspiring millions of young athletes. Apart from that, a large number of professionals will be getting opportunities in sports science, event operations and management, logistics and transport coordinators, broadcast and media, IT and communications, public relations and communications and in other fields as well,” it said in a release.
Earlier, the Indian Olympic Association endorsed the bid to host the CWG 2030 at its Special General Meeting (SGM) on August 13 in New Delhi. The IOA has already submitted an Expression of Interest to host the CWG 2030 and has until August 31 to submit its final bid proposal.
Aside from India, Nigeria and two other countries reportedly indicated interest in hosting the multi-sport event in 2030. The General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport will decide on the final host nation for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow during the last week of November.
India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010, with the event held in New Delhi.
