Chhath Puja 2022: Why is Chhath Puja celebrated? Know the date, history and importance of four days of Chhath

Chhath Puja History:

There are numerous mythological stories associated with the origins of Chhath Puja, some of which are mentioned in Rigvedic texts. Draupadi and Pandavas fasted for Chhath Puja in order to reclaim their kingdom and resolve their issues, according to Hindu mythology. Another legend holds that Karna, the son of Lord Surya and Kunti, used to perform Chhath Puja. During the Mahabharata period, he is said to have stood in water for hours to worship the Sun God.
Devotees offer Arghya and pray to Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya for their blessings during Chhath Puja. In addition, they make an offering to the Sun God for the prosperity and well-being of their children and family members.

Devotees chant Rigvedic mantras while worshiping Lord Surya. It is also said that Vedic sages used to perform Chhath Puja by exposing themselves to direct sunlight in order to obtain energy from the sun’s rays.

Chhath Puja 2022, Significance :

Women fast for 36 hours during Chhath Puja to seek blessings from Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya. The first day of Chhath is known as Nahay Khay – devotees bathe in holy water such as the Ganges, and women observe Chhath by keeping a Nirjala fast and preparing prasad for Lord Surya. The second and third days are known as Kharna and Chhath Puja, respectively. On these days, women observe a strict Nirjala fast. In addition, on the fourth day (Usha Arghya), women stand in water and offer Arghya to the rising sun before breaking their 36-hour fast.
