On Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will begin a two-day visit to New Delhi, where he will meet with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar in a critical bilateral discussion and discuss boundaries with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.
The trip is viewed as a component of continuous attempts to rebuild India-China trust, which was damaged during the fatal confrontations in the Galwan Valley in 2020.
It is anticipated that both parties would investigate fresh approaches to fostering confidence in order to guarantee enduring peace and stability along their disputed boundary.
“During his (Wang’s) visit, he will hold the 24th round of the Special Representatives’ (SR) Talks on the India-China boundary question with India’s SR, NSA Shri Doval,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
According to the MEA, Wang will land in New Delhi at around 4:15 p.m. on Monday and meet Jaishankar at 6 p.m. for detailed bilateral discussions.
On Tuesday morning, he will hold a fresh round of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary question with NSA Doval at 11 a.m.
Doval and Wang are the designated SRs for the border talks, which were resurrected last year following a summit in Kazan, Russia, between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A wide range of topics, such as trade, the border situation, and the potential restart of airline services between the two nations, are anticipated to be discussed during the negotiations. Wang will pay Prime Minister Modi a visit at his home at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg later on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Wang’s visit takes place against the backdrop of U.S. sanctions and shortly before Prime Minister Modi’s scheduled trip to China for the SCO summit later this month. President Donald Trump’s decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, including an additional 25 per cent penalty for India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
The momentum from NSA Doval’s December trip to China for boundary negotiations with Wang last year is being built upon by this round of high-level discussions.
A renewed effort to stabilize bilateral ties has been indicated by the recent visits to China by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and EAM Jaishankar for SCO-related meetings.
