Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday extended ‘Nuakhai’ greetings and conveyed his warm wishes to the people of the State.
In a video message he said, “Jay Jagannath, Jay Maa Samalei. I congratulate everybody for Nuakhai, symbolised by our culture, prosperity and unity. May this Nuakhai, which has come carrying new hopes, fill your life with happiness, peace and prosperity, this is what I am praying for in the cave of my heart.”
He continued, “The locals staying in other places return to their homes and unite with their families to celebrate Nuakhai. Both Nuakhai and Nuakhai Bhetghat (uniting with family on Nuakhai) hold significance in our culture. This enjoyment and merry making is a unique tradition of Nuakhai.”
People in Western Odisha mostly celebrate the agrarian festival of Nuakhai to welcome the new rice of the season. Since it is celebrated on the day following the Ganesh Chaturthi holiday, on the panchami tithi of the lunar fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada or Bhadraba, the dates are altered annually.
The Nuakhai celebration is this year on Thursday, August 28, according to the tithi. Odisha has already declared it a public holiday. In addition, the state government declared August 29 to be a holiday for all state government buildings, as well as all colleges, institutions, and schools.
