Every year on November 26, India commemorates Constitution Day, or National Law Day, as the day the Indian Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in 1949.
The Government of India declared November 26 as Constitution Day in 2015 in order to promote “constitutional values among residents.” The day was established in the year that marked the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the chairman of the Constitution’s Drafting Committee.
Samvidhan Divas is another name for Constitution Day. Following India’s independence, the Constituent Assembly charged a committee chaired by Dr. BR Ambedkar with drafting the Constitution. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, was the President of the Constituent Assembly, which was established in 1946.
Dr. Ambedkar finished the draft of the Indian Constitution and presented it to the Constituent Assembly in early 1948. This draft was adopted with very few changes on November 26, 1949. On January 26, 1950, the Indian Constitution went into effect, which is celebrated as Republic Day.
It took nearly three years for the Constituent Assembly to complete the important and historic task of drafting a Constitution for Independent India. With 1,17,360 words, the Indian Constitution is the world’s longest written constitution (in the English version).
The Preamble of the Constitution of India declares the country as a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic and aims to secure justice, liberty, and equality for all citizens and promote fraternity to maintain the unity and integrity of the nation.
