Cyclone ‘Asani’ over the Bay of Bengal is expected to cause heavy rain in some areas of Odisha starting today, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Such weather conditions are expected to persist in the areas until May 12.
The IMD has provided a day-by-day forecast in this regard.
May 10th:
- Heavy rain is expected in one or two locations across the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri.
- Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely in many places across coastal Odisha, in a few places across Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and in one or two places across the rest of Odisha.
May 11th:
- Heavy rain is expected in one or two locations across the districts of Ganjam, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, and Cuttack.
- Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely in most coastal Odisha districts and in a few places in interior Odisha districts.
May 12th:
- Heavy rain is expected in one or two locations across the districts of Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, and Balasore.
- Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely in many places across coastal Odisha and in a few places across interior Odisha.
Wind Warning: Strong winds of 40-50 kmph with gusts up to 60 kmph are expected along and off the Odisha coast on the 11th and 12th of May.
The cyclonic storm is expected to move nearly northwestwards until the 10th of May night, when it will reach Westcentral Bay of Bengal off the coasts of North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Following that, it is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards the Northwest Bay of Bengal off the coasts of North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The agency predicts that it will gradually weaken into a Cyclonic Storm over the next 24 hours.
