Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said today that the low pressure area over the south Andaman Sea and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal became a Well Marked Low Pressure Area over the same area.
The system is expected to move northwestward, intensify into a Depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal over the next 12 hours, and then become a Cyclonic Storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by tomorrow (May 8) evening, according to the agency.
It is expected to continue moving northwestwards and reach the west-central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal off the north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts by May 10, according to the IMD.
The agency was yet to make any forecast regarding the landfall area and intensity of the forecasted cyclone. When the system intensifies into a cyclonic storm, it will be termed ‘Cyclone Asani.’
On May 10, the Regional Meteorological Centre in here predicted that light to moderate rainfall will fall in many places across coastal Odisha, and heavy rain will fall in one or two places across Ganjam, Khordha, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur.
