As Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall in Gujarat at 5 p.m. today, the Gujarat government has evacuated over 74,000 people from eight coastal districts, including 35,822 along the coast of Kutch, issued prohibitory orders, shut down public transportation, and advised people to stay indoors.
The weather forecast for today: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the Saurashtra-Kutch coast due to the cyclonic storm’s landfall. Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rainfall was reported in areas of Kutch and Devbhumi Dwarka, two districts that are predicted to be the hardest hit by the storm, which the IMD classified as “very severe.”
Precautions have been taken: Two teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and two teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in Gujarat, with teams from the Army and Indian Air Force also on standby. As many as 187 cyclone shelters have been established, with power generators built to assure power supply in the event that the grid power supply fails.
Over 20,000 animals have been relocated to safer sites, an appropriate supply of rations has been ensured at all shelter homes, and 50 teams have been dispatched for road clearing activities.
A total of 74,000 individuals were evacuated.
As Cyclone Biparjoy approaches, the Gujarat shore is less than 200 kilometers from its path of destruction. As a result, authorities have evacuated 74,000 people from risky locations, notably 120 villages within 10 kilometers of the seashore in the Kutch district.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone will make landfall at Jakhau port as a very strong cyclonic storm, with wind speeds reaching up to 150 kilometers per hour.
The Navy has four ships on standby with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) capabilities. In addition, relief teams are stationed in Porbandar, Okha, and Valsura, ready to respond immediately. Helicopters from INS Hansa in Goa and INS Shikra in Mumbai are ready to deploy to Gujarat, if necessary.
Warning for fishermen:
Fishermen are urgently recommended to halt all fishing operations in the Arabian Sea’s northeast and adjacent east-central region. Those who are currently at sea are asked to return to shore. Offshore and onshore activity should be carefully regulated, and safeguards should be taken at ports along the country’s west coast. Naval bases are also told to take the required procedures.
Motor boats and small ships should be avoided in these areas. Evacuation plans should be put in place for the coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch, and rail and road traffic should be controlled. People in impacted areas are encouraged to stay indoors, and tourism activities may be prohibited during this time.
The authorities are constantly monitoring the situation and are ready to respond quickly to any emergencies that may arise.
