The Cyclonic Storm Gulab over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved nearly westwards with a speed of 10 kmph during last 6 hours and lay centered at 5:30 am on Sunday morning about 270 kms east-southeast of Gopalpur.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated, Cyclone Gulaab is likely to make landfall by Sunday midnight. The system is very likely to move westwards and cross North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coast,
The wind speeds could reach 75 to 85 kms per hour, gusting up to 95 kms per hour during landfall.
The IMD has sounded a red alert for seven districts – Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri which will experience very heavy rains over the next 24 hours.
Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jena mentioned 24 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 42 teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) have been deployed in the districts on the path of Gulab.
Over 500 people have already been evacuated in Gajapati district and more will be moved to safer places on Sunday taking into account a chance of landslides, he stated.
