The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone warning for south Odisha’s coasts as the severe cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ strengthens over the west-central Bay of Bengal.
According to the latest IMD advisory, the storm is moving north-northwest at 15 kmph and is likely to make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada on October 28 in the evening or night.
The storm is currently located near latitude 14.7°N and longitude 83.1°E, or about 190 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 270 km south-southeast of Kakinada, and 340 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam.
The IMD has issued a warning that the storm will bring heavy rain and severe winds to Andhra Pradesh and Odisha’s coasts.
The strong cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ is projected to have a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph with gusts up to 110 kmph when it makes landfall.
The administration has taken all necessary efforts to limit damage and protect public safety. Residents of the impacted areas are advised to remain indoors.
The IMD has asked fishermen not to go out to sea, and those who have already done so should return promptly.
