The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert as a low-pressure system strengthened into a deep depression over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, off the beaches of West Bengal and Bangladesh. The system is traveling northward at 20 km per hour.
As of 0830 hours IST, the deep depression was centered in latitude 21.3° N and longitude 88.5° E, about 60 kilometers southeast of Sagar Island and 110 kilometers east-southeast of Digha.
The IMD predicts heavy to extremely heavy rains in numerous northeastern states. Thunderstorms and heavy winds are forecast in the impacted regions.
The deep depression is expected to pass the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast between Sagar Island and Khepupara (Bangladesh) late afternoon, bringing heavy rain and strong gusts to the area.
