According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression over the west-central and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal and the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coasts has been moving slowly northwestward at a speed of 3 kmph over the last six hours, and it was at its center yesterday at 11:30 pm IST.
The depression’s present center is located close to latitude 19.0°N and longitude 84.9°E, around 30 km south of Gopalpur, Odisha, and 110 km northeast of Kalingapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, according to the regional weather office.
During the forenoon of August 19, 2025, the IMD projects that the depression will continue to move northwestward and cross the beaches of south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh around Gopalpur.
It is anticipated that the affected areas will see severe winds and heavy to extremely heavy rains as a result of the depression. It is recommended that residents of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh’s coastal districts remain vigilant and adopt the appropriate safety measures.
According to the IMD forecast for August 19, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) are expected to occur in the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangapur. There will be likely be isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls. These districts are under a red alert from the regional weather service.
In addition, the districts of Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Kandhamal are under an orange alert, which means that there will likely be heavy to extremely heavy rains, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph.
Other districts, such as Ganjam, Nayagarh, Boudh, Balangir, Nuapada, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sonepur, have been placed under a yellow warning, indicating a high likelihood of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds of 30 to 40 kmph.
