Day 1: Dhanteras
Dhanteras symbolizes the start of Diwali celebrations. On this day, people worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber, praying for prosperity and fortune. Devotees buy new products, such as gold coins, bars, and jewellery.
Day 2: Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali
On the second day, people celebrate Choti Diwali, also known as Naraka Chaturdashi. It commemorates Lord Krishna’s triumph over the demon Narakasura.
Day 3: Diwali
Diwali celebrates Lord Rama, Mata Sita, and Lakshman’s homecoming to Ayodhya. It also honors the triumph of goodness over evil. On this occasion, people decorate their homes with clay lamps (diyas), colorful rangoli, and lights. In the evening, devotees do Lakshmi and Ganesh pujas.
Day 4: Govardhan Puja
Following Diwali, Indians celebrate Govardhan Puja. It is dedicated to the worship of Govardhan Parvat (the mountain). It is stated that by lifting the mountain, Lord Krishna saved the inhabitants of Mathura from Lord Indra.
Day 5: Bhai Dooj
The final day of Diwali celebrations is known as Bhai Dooj, Bhau Beej, or Bhaiya Dooj. It commemorates the unique bond between brothers and sisters.
