Shah Rukh Khan has enjoyed the best year of his career thus far, with Jawan and Pathaan both grossing over Rs 1,000 crore globally, but his latest, Dunki, has failed to generate the same level of excitement. Dunki was released in theaters on Thursday and earned Rs 30 crore nett domestic on its first day, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. After Jawan, Animal, Pathaan, Tiger 3, Gadar 2, and Adipurush, this is the year’s seventh-largest opening. While Jawan made Rs 75 crore on its first day, even the historic flop Adipurush made Rs 36 crore.
The opening day figures make it the least successful Shah Rukh film of the year, but it outperforms Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (Rs 15.81 crore), Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (Rs 15.73 crore), Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (Rs 11.1 crore), and Dream Girl 2 (Rs 10.69 crore).
On Thursday, the overall occupancy rate at Dunki was 29.94%. The NCR region saw 1412 shows with an approximate 31% occupancy, while Mumbai had 1081 shows with an approximate 29.75% occupancy. Dunki was launched on its own on Thursday, but on Friday, it will compete with Prashanth Neel’s Salaar, which is being published in different languages across the country. Prabhas, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and others, Salaar is handily outpacing Dunki, and will make more than Rs 60 crore on opening day.
Despite being Shah Rukh Khan’s least successful film of the year, the opening day stats here are higher than his 2018 release Zero, which was also released on the same date. Zero began with a budget of Rs 19.35 crore and ended with a total of Rs 90.28 crore.
The opening results are lower for director Rajkumar Hirani, who is otherwise recognized for his successful track record at the box office. The Ranbir Kapoor film grossed Rs 34.75 crore at the box office and a total of Rs 342.53 during its theatrical run. Dunki, which was released in the aftermath of Animal’s phenomenal success, stars Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, and others.
