Last year, the Center launched the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) to give free food grains to more than 80 crore recipients covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), as a component of its push to diminish the difficulties of individuals during the pandemic.

The total financial implication is estimated at Rs 2,27,841 crore for PMGKAY, Sitharaman added.

Purpose of PMGKAY SCHEME

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while tending to the country, had declared that the Center’s free food program PMGKAY, will be reached out for a very long time till Diwali.

Five kgs of foodgrains per individual each month is given liberated from cost under the PMGKAY to 81.35 crore recipients covered under the NFSA.
