The Gujarat government has developed a supplementary textbook on the ‘Bhagavad Gita’ in order to foster a stronger relationship between pupils and India’s rich cultural legacy. This textbook will be integrated into the curriculum for students in Classes 6 through 8 beginning with the forthcoming academic year. Earlier on Friday, Gujarat’s Minister of State for Education, Praful Pansheriya, stated that this decision is consistent with the ideals of the Union government’s National Education Policy, which was implemented three years ago.
Pansheriya stated on his social media post that the State Education Department has chosen to integrate the spiritual concepts and ideals from the ‘Shrimad Bhagavad Gita’ as a supplementary textbook inside the curriculum of classes 6 to 8.
“On the occasion of Gita Jayanti, Education Department of Gujarat Government released a supplementary textbook of “Shrimad Bhagavad Gita” with Sanskrit verses, Gujarati translation, illustrations. The aim is to strengthen the values of life and principles of karma in children by including this book in the study sequence, which teaches the lessons of life values,’ reads Pansheriya’s post on X(formally Twitter).

The Gujarat Education Minister expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel for this decision, emphasizing that this academic move would instill pride in students and foster a deeper connection to India’s diverse culture and ancient knowledge traditions, as conveyed through the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita.
He also stated that the additional textbook, which is based on the venerated scripture, would teach moral ideals among kids. He stated that the first component of this textbook, intended for grades 6 through 8, would be delivered to schools across the country soon. Two further parts for kids in grades 9 through 12 are also in the works.
Pansheriya said, “This decision, taken under the ‘National Education Policy 2020’ under the guidance of Prime Minister @narendramodi ji, will play an important role in improving values among students.”
The Gujarat government stated in the state Assembly in March 2022 that the Bhagavad Gita would be included in the educational curriculum for grades 6 through 12.
This choice was made to correspond with the NEP 2020, which emphasizes teaching pupils to both modern and ancient culture, traditions, and knowledge systems in order to help them create a feeling of pride.
