A British-era bridge in Gujarat’s Morbi collapsed last evening, killing at least 141 people. Approximately 177 people have been rescued, and teams are still looking for several others who are still missing.
Around 500 people were on the suspension bridge, including women and children, when the cables supporting it snapped, sending them crashing into the river below. According to officials, the bridge can support only about 125 people.
Many people were performing Chhath puja rituals on the 150-year-old bridge, which is located 300 kilometers from Vadodara.
After the bridge collapsed, people piled on top of each other. Many people were seen desperately clinging to the bridge’s remains in videos, while others were seen swimming to safety.
“After filing a FIR under various sections of the IPC, we arrested nine people.” “The arrested include Oreva company managers and ticket clerks,” ANI quoted Ashok Yadav, IG, Rajkot range, as saying. An FIR was filed on culpable homicide charges against the agencies in charge of the bridge’s maintenance and operation. Sandeepsinh Zala, chief executive officer of Morbi Municipality, stated that the city-based Oreva Group has been awarded the contract for the bridge’s renovation and operation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Morbi on Tuesday, November 1, as part of a three-day visit to election-bound Gujarat in the aftermath of the bridge collapse over the Machchhu river.
The state government has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each of those killed in the accident and Rs 50,000 for those injured. The Prime Minister also announced a monetary assistance of Rs. 2 lakh for each of the victims’ families.
