Haryana’s Home Minister Anil Vij on Thursday mentioned the state government has set up a three-member committee to draft a regulation in opposition to “love jihad”, a term used by BJP leaders to describe religious conversions within the guise of marriage.
The minister’s statement comes days after the Uttar Pradesh government cleared a draft ordinance in opposition to conversion via force or fraudulent means.
However even before the UP ordinance was cleared, Mr Vij had announced {that a} committee was being set up in Haryana to frame a new law.
The Haryana committee will also study laws enacted by other states on the issue, Mr Vij said.
He tweeted that the “drafting committee formed to frame law on love jihad” in Haryana might be made up of state Home Secretary TL Satyaprakash, senior police official Navdeep Singh Virk and Additional Advocate General Deepak Manchanda.
Earlier this month, Mr Vij had instructed the Haryana Assembly that the state government is contemplating a law against “love jihad” and has sought data from Himachal Pradesh.
The Himachal Pradesh Assembly had passed a invoice last year in opposition to conversion by force, inducement or via a marriage solemnised for the “sole purpose” of adopting a new religion.
The minister was then replying to a calling consideration movement within the House on the murder of a young woman in Ballabhgarh.
“Anyone can marry anyone, anyone can fall in love with anyone. But when there’s a conspiracy for changing religion by trapping somebody in love, then it is very essential to stop that conspiracy. We’ll take whatever steps are required,” he had mentioned.
Recently, he also praised the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh for approving a draft ordinance to deal with religious conversion for the sake of marriage, which could land violators in jail for up to 10 years if the woman is a minor.
Mr Vij has also informed reporters earlier that with the enactment of the Haryana law, strict action might be taken against anyone indulging in religious conversion via pressure, by luring someone or within the name of love.
