Heavy warfare resumed in Gaza on Saturday, a day after a short humanitarian truce in the beleaguered enclave was broken, with the Israeli military claiming to have hit Hamas command centers.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated on Saturday in an update on X that it “struck operational command centers in Gaza, which Hamas terrorists were operating, as well as underground sites and a military compound from which anti-tank missiles were launched at soldiers” on Friday.
The IDF also claimed to have destroyed other terrorist cells throughout Gaza, including one with over ten terrorists operating near ground soldiers.
It also claimed to have foiled two more terrorist cells in joint IDF ground and aircraft operations that hurled mortar shells against IDF troops in Gaza.
The temporary truce, agreed to on November 24, expired at 7 a.m. on Friday, with Israel and Hamas blaming each other for the breakdown.
Since the commencement of hostilities, at least 178 people have been killed and 589 have been injured, according to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry in Gaza.
Meanwhile, according to the Palestinian Prisoner Society, Israeli soldiers imprisoned around 260 Palestinians in the West Bank during the now-expired truce.
Between November 24 and 30, 104 hostages — 80 Israelis, 24 foreign foreigners — and 240 Palestinian detainees were released under the Israel-Hamas agreement.
However, the IDF has stated that at least 136 hostages, including 17 women and children, are still being held in Gaza.
The Israeli military has also stated that a new interactive map of Gaza organized into numbered districts and “evacuation zones” is intended to reduce casualties when strikes are carried out in civilian areas.
Earlier in the day, the IDF dropped leaflets in southern Gaza that featured a QR code that linked to a map.
However, during the weeks of bombardment, Gaza’s telecommunications and electrical infrastructure were severely damaged, leaving many Palestinians without dependable access to the internet and power.’
