The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts for numerous districts in Odisha, predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning, and strong surface winds between May 25 and 30, 2025.
According to an official press release, a cyclonic circulation is currently present over north coastal Odisha and surrounding areas at an altitude of 3.1 km above mean sea level. A low-pressure system is also likely to form over the west-central and bordering north Bay of Bengal around May 27.
The IMD has issued an Orange Warning for May 25, indicating thunderstorms with lightning and surface wind speeds reaching 40–50 kmph. Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur in the afternoon or evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Kandhamal.
A Yellow Warning has also been issued for the same day for thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds of 30–40 kmph in the afternoon or evening at one or two places in Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Sonepur, Boudh, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Bargarh, Balangir, and Nuapada.
The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms with lightning and surface wind speeds of 30-40 kmph on May 26, with heavy rainfall expected in one or two locations in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar. Thunderstorms with similar wind speeds are forecast for Balasore, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Kandhamal, and Malkangiri.
On May 27, a Yellow Warning was issued for thunderstorms with lightning and surface wind speeds of 30-40 kmph in one or two locations in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Jajpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal.
On May 28, the IMD has forecast a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms with lightning, wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, and heavy rainfall likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Jajpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. Thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph are also likely in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal.
On May 29, another Yellow Warning has been issued for thunderstorms with lightning, wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, and heavy rainfall at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Malkangiri. Similar thunderstorms are likely in Jajpur, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Kandhamal.
On May 30th thunderstorms with lightning, wind speeds of 40-50 kmph, and heavy rainfall are expected in one or two locations in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Nuapada, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri. Thunderstorms with similar wind speeds are also forecast for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, and Ganjam.
The IMD further indicated that no substantial change in maximum daytime temperatures is likely in Odisha during the next 6-7 days.
