On Tuesday, Netflix finally unveiled the teaser for its forthcoming original series, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, after months of teasing the lavish world of Heeramandi. Heeramandi’s teaser features all the elements one would anticipate from a Bhansali movie, but because it’s a web series, viewers will get far more of it this time around. The universe of Heeramandi is one in which the “tawaifs” rule over the “nawabs” who pay them visits and wield immense power. The show is set in pre-independence India, when the “Inquilab” slogans are beginning to catch on and even the women who live in Heeramandi’s palaces are compelled to take part in the liberation movement.
Manisha Koirala appears to be playing the head of the palace where women are trained to entice men with their dancing and singing. Sonakshi Sinha seems to be assuming the role of the rebel who rebels and seeks to forge her own path in life. The persona of Aditi Rao Hydari appears to be spearheading an uprising and is engaged in the freedom battle. The trailer also has appearances by Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, and Adhyayan Suman.

Heeramandi is an extension of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s trademark style which has been evident in his works like Gangubai Kathiawadi, Padmaavat, and even Devdas. The grand sets of the show, the fineries, and even the dialogues spoken by the characters here are otherworldly, which might get appreciated by fans of the filmmaker.
This is Bhansali’s first web series and at the launch announcement in 2023, when he was asked about being a tough taskmaster on set, he said, “There’s nothing like that. I’m not a task master, it’s the image the media has built upon me that I’m difficult to work with and that I’m temperamental. We just sit over there and find a moment which emerges out of discussion and conversation which means that I use their mind and they use my mind, we all get together and that moment of magic comes to us, which I then take credit for and say that I created the magic.”
Heeramandi premieres on May 1 on Netflix. Bhansali has already announced his next film, Love and War, starring Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal.
