The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has announced the availability of seven new online sports science courses. According to the IIT, the courses can be taken online for free.
These extensive online courses strive to bridge the theoretical and practical divides. The lessons are customized to the bodily shape and cultural features of Indian and South Asian people.
The first batch of these seven courses will begin on 19th February, 2024. Interested candidates should apply for the courses at nptel.ac.in/courses.
In 2003, seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati, and Roorkee) and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore launched the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL).
Prof Andrew Thangaraj, coordinator, NPTEL, IIT Madras, said, “This comprehensive set of courses will be a game-changer, addressing India-centric sports needs and promoting a well-rounded approach. There is a high demand for skilled personnel across sports domains with competitive sports expanding rapidly in India. These NPTEL courses equip learners to understand how to enhance performance, monitor diet and training frequencies, formulate recovery programs, and offer a holistic approach to sports science.”
The eligibility criteria include Class 12 passing certificate.
According to IT-M, the courses are appropriate for students pursuing Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Sports Sciences, Physiotherapy, Physical Education, and other related fields. After finishing, students might pursue Diplomas or PG degrees in these fields. IIT Madras’ Center of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics has introduced courses in this area.
Prof Mahesh Panchagnula, co-principal investigator, Center of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics, IIT Madras, said, “These courses are for everyone. For anybody who is an enthusiast, a sports person, or who is interested in topics like strengthening, fitness, conditioning, sports, nutrition, and psychology.”
While the courses are available online through India’s National MOOCs platform, SWAYAM (swayam.gov.in), the final exam will be in-person and proctored, with a charge of Rs 1,000 per course.
These courses are aimed at a wide range of people, including coaches, athletes, trainers, physiotherapists, and nutritionists, among others. It covers important sports themes like biomechanics, injury prevention, sports psychology, Indian strength training, and cultural aspects of sports.
Students can gain a domain certification in Sports Science by completing five core courses and two elective courses.
