On Sunday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued yellow and orange warnings for thunderstorms in numerous Odisha districts, along with lightning, hail, and gusty winds. These weather occurrences are projected to last until March 20, 2026, with wind gusts reaching 50-60 km/h in some regions.
On March 16, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a yellow warning for isolated thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds (30-40 kmph) in the districts of Sundergarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore. Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are forecast in one or two locations in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Khurda, Nayagarh, and Cuttack, while the remaining districts will see dry weather.
On March 17, Mayurbhanj was given an orange warning for thunderstorms with lightning, hail, and strong winds (50-60 kmph), while Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak received a yellow alert (40-50 kmph). Thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusts (30-40 kmph) are also forecast for Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
Yellow warnings for isolated thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are still in effect in Mayurbhanj, Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Balasore, Gajapati, Cuttack, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, and Bhadrak from March 18 to March 20.
The IMD has advised residents to be cautious, avoid outside activities during storms, and secure unsecured things to reduce damage. Fishermen along the coast have also been advised to remain cautious due to strong winds.
