India and the European Union hope to finalize a trade agreement within three months, tackling concerns such as agriculture, sustainability, and market access in a deal that could revolutionize global business, according to a report released on Sunday.
Negotiators indicate increasing momentum in discussions, which have been boosted by US President Donald Trump’s tariff offensive, according to a OneWorldOutlook report.
According to the article, the trade agreement provides the EU with a protection against global volatility, while for India, it will be a strategic declaration of confidence after a decade of reforms and prosperity.
“Where the EU’s approach is driven by the need to shield its market from global volatility, India’s motivation is strategic. New Delhi sees this deal not as an act of desperation but as an assertion of its global economic confidence—a step toward shaping, rather than merely adapting to, the new trade order,” the report said.
India’s expanding manufacturing base, deepening digital economy, and robust domestic demand make it an indispensable market and production hub for European firms seeking alternatives to China, the report added.
Europe’s efforts to lessen reliance on Russia and China have made India an important partner in its diversification plan, despite New Delhi’s continuous links with Moscow, according to the research.
India has resisted binding sustainability measures connected with the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal calling them “unfair” to penalize developing economies for past emissions they did not produce.
If a trade agreement is reached, it will symbolize India’s emergence as a key actor in establishing global trade laws; if it is postponed, it will represent the reality of a complex discussion between equals, the article stated.
