On March 20, 2025, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved eight major acquisition proposals totaling more than Rs 54,000 crore. Among these, the Indian Army will receive an updated 1350 HP engine for its T-90 tanks, which would improve their mobility, particularly in high-altitude areas, by increasing the power-to-weight ratio.
Strengthening naval capabilities
The DAC approved the Indian Navy’s purchase of Varunastra torpedoes, an indigenous ship-launched anti-submarine weapon developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory. The advent of these torpedoes will improve the Navy’s ability to successfully combat submarine threats.
Advanced systems for Indian Air Force
The DAC also approved the acquisition of Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft systems for the Indian Air Force. These modern surveillance aircraft will considerably improve operational awareness and fighting units’ effectiveness by providing real-time battlefield intelligence.
Defence acquisitions in 2025
As part of the Ministry of Defence’s ‘Year of Reforms’ effort, DAC issued new rules targeted at decreasing capital acquisition delays. These reforms will result in a more simplified, effective, and efficient procurement mechanism to modernize India’s armed forces.
