Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the catastrophic earthquake in Myanmar, which has resulted in the loss of over 1,000 lives.
In a post on X, PM Modi posted, “Spoke with Senior General H.E. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Conveyed our deep condolences at the loss of lives in the devastating earthquake.”
Under its Act East policy, India has launched ‘Operation Brahma’ to provide urgent relief to Myanmar. On Saturday, more than 15 tonnes of essential aid were dispatched following a series of powerful tremors that wreaked havoc on Friday.
PM Modi went on to emphasize India’s steadfast dedication to supporting its neighbors during emergencies, saying, “As a close friend and neighbor, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour.” As part of Operation Brahma, search and rescue teams, humanitarian aid, and disaster relief supplies are being quickly sent to the impacted districts.
The first shipment of humanitarian aid arrived at Yangon Airport on Saturday morning, according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who also proclaimed the start of Operation Brahma.
“Operation Brahma gets underway. First tranche of humanitarian aid from India has reached the Yangon Airport in Myanmar,” the EAM posted on X.
The assistance shipment contained tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and essential medications, the Ministry of External Affairs said, highlighting India’s role as a first responder.
The relief supplies were flown by the Indian Air Force (IAF) from Air Force Station Hindon on a C-130J aircraft. In addition to essential medical items like paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, bandages, and solar lamps and generator sets, the package includes ready-to-eat meals.
The Indian Embassy in Bangkok, meantime, is keeping a careful eye on events in neighboring Thailand, where earthquakes were also detected. There have been no complaints of any Indian citizens being impacted, officials revealed.
While ensuring the safety of all Embassy employees in Bangkok and the Consulate in Chiang Mai, the Embassy recommended Indian nationals in Thailand to contact emergency services if necessary.
