The Indian High Commission in Port of Spain reaffirmed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to healthcare aid in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), announcing that a 50-day prosthetic Limb Fitment Camp will take place from October to November, offering free prosthetic limbs to 800 recipients.
The program, which will be held at Divali Nagar in the Caribbean island, is totally funded by the Indian government. It will be hosted by the NGO Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayta Samiti (BMVSS) in partnership with the Indian mission.
PM Modi announced the camp during his visit to Trinidad and Tobago in July.
The Indian High Commission stated that New Delhi stands in the “forefront in rendering developmental assistance” to the Caribbean country.
“The Limb Camp is being organised under the patronage of the Office of the Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago and in active collaboration with the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) of the country. A 10-member team of BMVSS will be stationed in T&T for this purpose,” it said.
“Our solidarity, friendship and partnership have been steadfast and will continue to be in future,” the Indian mission added.
BMVSS, established in 1975, also known as Jaipur Foot NGO, is the world’s largest organisation for the rehabilitation of persons with lower limb disability.
According to the Indian High Commission, BMVSS has rehabilitated more than 2.4 million people with disabilities in India and 46 developing nations.
In 2018, the Government of India, in collaboration with BMVSS, launched the “India for Humanity” campaign, which organized a series of Jaipur Foot Camps across the world.
Under this program, the Indian government has funded and provided logistical assistance for camps in 25 nations, providing free artificial limbs to approximately 17,000 people with disabilities.
This has greatly aided the physical and socioeconomic rehabilitation of physically challenged people in various countries, allowing them to live normal lives, according to the Indian High Commission.
