India and the United States will establish a new semiconductor production plant named ‘Shakti,’ which will be one of the world’s first multi-material fabrication facilities dedicated to national security.
US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed a groundbreaking agreement to build a new semiconductor fabrication factory focusing on sophisticated sensing, communication, and power electronics for national security, next-generation telecommunications, and green energy applications.
The fab unit will be a collaboration between Bharat Semiconductors, 3rdiTech, and the United States Space Force.
The factory, which is expected to open in Uttar Pradesh, will focus on three critical areas for modern warfare: sophisticated sensing, communication, and high-voltage power electronics.
The fab, which will manufacture infrared, gallium nitride, and silicon carbide semiconductors, will be made possible by funding from the India Semiconductor Mission and a strategic technology cooperation between Bharat Semi, 3rdiTech, and the US Space Force.
During their meeting, both leaders praised combined efforts to facilitate resilient, secure, and sustainable semiconductor supply chains, including GlobalFoundries’ (GF) creation of the GF Kolkata Power Center in Kolkata, which will enhance mutually beneficial linkages in research and development in chip manufacturing and enable game-changing advances for zero and low emissions as well as connected vehicles, internet of things devices, AI, and data centres.
They took notice of GF’s aspirations to pursue long-term, cross-border manufacturing and technological relationships with India that will create high-quality jobs in both nations.
They also commemorated the new strategic relationship between the US Department of State and the India Semiconductor Mission, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, in support of the International Technology Security and Innovation (ITSI) Fund.
Both countries also praised our industry’s efforts to establish safe, secure, and resilient supply chains for the US, Indian, and international automotive markets, including Ford Motor Company’s submission of a Letter of Intent to use its Chennai plant to manufacture for export to global markets.
