Every year on October 8, Indian Air Force Day is observed. This year marks the event’s 90th anniversary.
On Saturday, as many as 80 military aircraft and helicopters will demonstrate the prowess of the Indian Air Force at a grand event in Chandigarh to commemorate Air Force Day. The choppers and aircraft will take part in a spectacular fly-past at the Sukhna Lake complex, with a dress rehearsal on October 6. The aerial display will be witnessed by President Droupadi Murmu and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Sukhna Lake.
The Indian Air Force will display a variety of aircraft, including the Rafale, Prachand, Sukhoi Su-30, Jaguar, Chinook, Apache, and Mi-17. Meanwhile, the Akashganga Paratrooper team will be followed by the Sarang air display and Surya Kiran aerobatics teams at the event.
All you need to know about the 90th Indian Air Force Day celebrations:
- The IAF has decided to hold its annual Air Force Day parade and fly-past outside of the national capital region of Delhi for the first time.
- Security has been tightened in preparation for the Air Force Day celebrations.
- To ferry people to the air show, the city administration also organized shuttle services between alighting/parking points and Sukhna Lake. The ferry services are available for a fee of 20 through the Chandigarh Tourism app.
- Prior to the air show, a ceremonial parade was held at the air force station on Saturday morning. The parade was inspected by Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari.
- At the ceremony, the Chief of Air Staff unveiled the IAF’s brand new combat uniform pattern.
- The newly inducted indigenously-built Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) “Prachand” will also participate in the fly-past as part of a three-aircraft formation.
- “There could not have been a better timing for LCH induction than Navratri and in the land of warriors, Rajasthan,” said defence minister Rajnath Singh at the helicopter’s launch.
- The grand fly-past will take place later in the afternoon at Sukhna Lake. President Droupadi Murmu will preside over it.
The advanced light helicopter Dhruv, Chinook, Apache, and Mi-17 will all take part in the aerial display.
