The forthcoming white-ball series between Team India and Sri Lanka has its fixtures confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In Indian cricket, the Gautam Gambhir era will begin with the T20I and One Day International (ODI) series. The former India opener and two-time ICC World Cup champion was named the men’s senior team’s head coach on Tuesday. Rahul Dravid has been replaced by Gambhir as the head coach of India in all formats.
Gambhir-coached Team India will tour Sri Lanka for three T20Is and as many ODI in the July-August window. Sri Lanka are set to host India in back-to-back T20Is on July 26 and 27. The bilateral ODI series will get underway on August 1. All T20I matches will be contested at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo will host the entire ODI series between India and Sri Lanka.
Sanath Jayasuriya’s first assignment
As an interim coach, Sanath Jayasuriya’s first game would be against visiting India, joining Gambhir as a debutant in the series. The Men in Blue’s most recent bilateral series tour of the island nation took place in 2021. While experienced opener Shikhar Dhawan led the reserve team, Dravid served as India’s acting head coach. While Sri Lanka overshadowed the visitors in the Twenty20 Internationals, India won the ODI series 2-1. Before traveling to Sri Lanka for the white-ball series, India will finish its tour through Zimbabwe.
Wanindu Hasaranga steps down
In the ODI series, India will probably miss having Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma on the team. India’s captain might be versatile batsman KL Rahul, since senior players are anticipated to be rested. India’s T20I team against Sri Lanka is expected to be captained by all-around player Hardik Pandya. Prior to the India series, Wanindu Hasaranga resigned from his position as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain. As per Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), Hasaranga has made the decision to give up the skipper responsibilities and continue playing for the team.
India’s away series will begin with the T20I games which will be taking place at the Pallekele International Stadium. It will be followed by a trip to Colombo where the two sides will meet again for another three-match ODI series which will take place at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.
