Drug misuse and illicit trafficking continue to be a major concern to individuals, families, and communities all over the world. Drug misuse has far-reaching implications, including deteriorating health, shattered relationships, and decreased productivity. Every year on June 26th, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, also known as World Drug Day, is observed to raise critical awareness about the destructive impacts of drug usage.
The goal of the day is to create awareness about the importance of treating drug users with respect and understanding. It places an emphasis on providing evidence-based, voluntary services to everybody while providing alternatives to punishment. The day also emphasizes the importance of prevention and approaching the issue with compassion. Furthermore, it tries to address and counteract the stigma and discrimination experienced by drug users by fostering polite and non-judgmental language and attitudes.
Theme
The theme for this year is “People First: stop stigma and Discrimination, strengthen Prevention”. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) seeks to promote awareness about the significance of respecting and empathizing with drug users, providing evidence-based, voluntary services to all, offering alternatives to punishment, emphasizing prevention, and leading compassionately. The UNODC’s (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) campaign for this year also said that it aims to combat stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs by promoting language and attitudes that are respectful and non-judgmental.”
History
On December 7, 1987, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 26 to be International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This was done to help them in their quest to rid society of drugs. It has been conducted annually on June 26 since 1988, with the goal of motivating individuals and communities to take aggressive actions against drug misuse and illicit drug trafficking.
