International Literacy Day 2024: It is observed annually on September 8 throughout the world to promote awareness about the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right and a matter of dignity. It seeks to encourage literacy and help construct a more literate and sustainable society.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) celebrates International Literacy Day at the global, regional, national, and local levels around the world.
On a global scale, a conference and award ceremony for the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes will be held in Yaoundé, Cameroon on September 9 and 10. It will also provide an opportunity to throw light on the literacy agenda in Cameroon and Africa as part of the African Union’s Year of Education and beyond.

The theme for International Literacy Day 2024 is ‘Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace.”
International Literacy Day 2024 will provide an opportunity to unpack literacy difficulties in multilingual environments in order to achieve long-term peace, as well as to consider potential solutions for improving policies, lifelong learning systems, governance, programmes, and practices. ILD2024 will be commemorated in person and online at the global, regional, national, and local levels.
UNESCO created International Literacy Day on October 26, 1966, during its 14th General Conference. The first celebration occurred in 1967. This day emphasizes the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and society, since it is critical in creating a well-educated and productive society.
