Former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected as India’s 14th Vice President on Saturday, with an overwhelming majority in the 16th election.
The Election Commission announced that Dhankhar, the NDA nominee, had won the Vice Presidential election against the Opposition’s candidate Margaret Alva.
As incumbent Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu’s term expires on August 10, members of both houses of Parliament voted on Saturday to elect the next Vice-President.
According to Utpal Kumar Singh, the returning officer for the vice presidential election, only 725 of the total 780 electors voted in the vice presidential election. There were 15 invalid votes and 710 valid votes out of a total of 725 votes cast.
According to the Election Commission, Dhankhar received 528 first preference votes, while Alva received only 182 votes.
