Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrat Sahu advised all district administrations on Monday to remain alert and prepared for the low pressure that is expected to occur over the southwest Bay of Bengal on May 22, 2024.
A low-pressure area is expected to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22, 2024. It is expected to continue northeastwards before settling as a depression over central sections of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24, 2024, according to the India Meteorological Department.
“Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over central Bay of Bengal from 23rd morning. It would extend to adjoining areas of the North Bay of Bengal from 24th May, with an increase in wind speed of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph. Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough over central Bay of Bengal from 23rd May and over North Bay of Bengal from 24th May, 2024 onwards” read the release issued by India Meteorological Department.
Taking the IMD’s forecast seriously, Sahu has instructed the district collectors to keep a close watch on low-pressure system and stay prepared to meet any eventuality.
Sahu has warned fishermen not to enter into the middle Bay of Bengal on May 23 and the North Bay of Bengal on May 24. Fishermen who were out at sea should return to the coast by May 23.
Low pressure will cause light to moderate rainfall in many places, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in the districts of north Odisha on May 24 and 25.
