Varanasi, November 20: A shocking incident unfolded in Varanasi as local police apprehended a man for allegedly breaking into a graveyard and exhuming the body of a five-year-old girl. The accused, identified as Mohammad Rafeeq, 30, was discovered in an inebriated state, sleeping next to the girl’s body when her father visited the grave. Authorities are now investigating the possibility of sexual assault on the deceased.
The father, a resident of Dashashwamedh area, reported in his police complaint that his daughter had succumbed to an ailment the previous week, and he had laid her to rest in a graveyard at Rewari Talab. Growing suspicious, he decided to inspect the grave days later, only to find the body missing.
Upon uncovering the disturbing scene, the police promptly arrested Rafeeq, charging him under section 297 (trespassing on burial places) of the IPC, as confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police RS Gautam. A post-mortem examination, conducted by a panel of three doctors, including a female doctor, raised concerns about potential sexual assault on the girl’s body.
To further investigate the matter, the panel recommended DNA profiling of the accused. The DCP stated that an application would be filed in court to seek permission for the collection of a DNA sample from Rafeeq for the test.
