The mortal remains, which were transported to the Congress headquarters from his home in a flower-adorned car, were also transferred to the Ghat. PM Narendra Modi, various Union Ministers, top BJP leaders, Congress leaders, and members of the Gandhi family paid tribute to the former Prime Minister. The ceremonial guard of honour was followed by full state honours, including the 21-gun salute.
Manmohan Singh’s final journey: The Centre has said that Dr Singh will be accorded a full state funeral and that Saturday will be a half-day holiday in all Central government offices and public sector undertakings. State mourning has also been declared for seven days until January 1.
The government has agreed to a Congress request to allocate space for a memorial to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Congress wanted Singh cremated in a location where a memorial could be built in his honor. In fact, the UPA government, led by Singh, had resisted proposals for separate memorials. In a late-night statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that following the Cabinet meeting, Amit Shah informed Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and the family of Late Dr. Manmohan Singh that the government will allocate space for the memorial.
