A mere two months after winning the Ballon d’Or, Argentine sensation Lionel Messi kept his title as the greatest FIFA men’s player at London on Monday.
Pep Guardiola, who coached Messi at Barcelona, arrived to pick up the prize for men’s best coach, but the 36-year-old did not attend the ceremony in London, according to Xinhua.
Last season, the Spaniard led Manchester City to their first Champions League, FA Cup, and Premier League victory. Many Man City players also benefited from the triple, as six of the Brazilian’s colleagues were named to the men’s squad of the year and Ederson won the goalkeeper award.
In addition, Spain’s Aitana Bonmati, a midfielder for Barcelona, added the women’s best player title to her women’s Ballon d’Or, and Sarina Wiegman, the manager of England, was named the women’s best coach.
Marta has been recognized with the FIFA Special Award for her exceptional career achievements. At six World Cup campaigns, the 37-year-old Brazilian scored 17 goals in 23 games. She received six accolades for being the finest female player in the world.
