Muharram is the first month of the Islamic year and the start of a new year according to the Islamic calendar. It is considered to be one of the most auspicious months by Muslims. Muharram 2022 began in India on July 31, 2022. (Sunday).
The battle of Karbala took place during the month of Muharram, and Hazrat Imam Hussain (grandson of Hazrat Muhammad SAW) was mercilessly martyred (10th Muharram) by the Umayyad Caliph Yazid I. This is why Muslims all over the world observe Muharram with grief, mourning, and sadness.
10th Muharram (Ashura): Date in India
The 10th of Muharram, or Ashura, is a significant date for Muslims because it commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. In India, Ashura 2022 is on Tuesday, August 9, 2022. On this date, India will observe the Muharram holiday.
During the first 10 days of Muharram, Shia Muslims wear black outfits and march through the streets to mourn the death of their beloved Imam Hussain and the pain inflicted on his family members – Hazrat Fatimah, Hazrat Ali, and Hazrat Muhammad. Muslims from various communities observe Ashura in various ways; some fast, others abstain, and still others attend religious gatherings.
History and Significance
The Islamic month of Muharram is extremely important to Muslims. Muslims mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the son of Hazrat Ali and grandson of Prophet Muhammad SAW) in the Battle of Karbala with deep grief, despair, and melancholy.
During the battle, Imam Hussain was mercilessly beheaded by the Umayyad Caliph Yazid I on the 10th of Muharram. The event occurred in 690 CE and has been observed annually by Muslims as ‘Muharram,’ which means prohibition. During this month, Muslims refrain from participating in any joyous events or celebrations in order to pay tribute and honor Imam Hussain’s martyrdom.
