The auspicious moment, or ‘Lagna,’ for Nuakhai, Western Odisha’s prominent agrarian festival, has been finalised. The ‘Nabanna Lagna’ for Nuakhai has been fixed between 10:33 AM to 10:55 AM on August 28, 2025. During this time, newly harvested rice, known as ‘Nabanna,’ will be offered to Goddess Samaleswari, the presiding deity of Sambalpur.
The schedule was finalised by the Brahmamandap Pandit Mahasabha. It was fixed on Nandotsav day, a day after Janmastami.
On the Panchami tithi of the Odia month of Bhadrab, family members gather to celebrate Nuakhai, which fosters blessings, unity, and thankfulness. Warm greetings, traditional music, and vibrant customs are all part of the celebrations. An essential component of the festival is the custom of “Nuakhai Juhar,” in which people ask for blessings from neighbors and elders to promote forgiveness and harmony.
The festival features lively Sambalpuri costumes, upbeat folk dances, and traditional food to highlight Western Odisha’s rich cultural legacy. It’s a moment to unite, set aside disagreements, and rejoice in the harvest season’s abundance.
