Only a few days remain until Navratri, or the nine nights of the Goddess. Everyone is ecstatic to welcome the Goddess into their homes. The festival of Navratri honors the Goddess Durga, also known as Shakti – the supreme Goddess. This year, Navratri will begin on September 26, 2022 and end on October 5, 2022. Devotees worship the various forms of Goddess Durga during these nine nights. The celebration concludes on the tenth day, Vijayadashami.
Everyone is aware that Goddess Durga defeated Mahishasura after a 9-day battle. However, some people may be unaware of the full story behind these nine days of Navratri and why Navratri is celebrated for nine days.
WHY IS NAVRATRI CELEBRATED FOR 9 DAYS?
Hindus celebrate the goddess Durga’s victory over the evil Mahishasura during the Navratri festival. It is said that Lord Brahma, the most powerful God, bestowed the gift of immortality on Mahishasura, ensuring that he would never die. Nonetheless, this boon comes with one condition: the person who defeats Mahishasura must be a woman. Mahishasura happily accepted the gift because he didn’t believe any woman could kill him. However, no deity was able to stop Mahishasura and his followers from attacking humanity on Earth as they grew stronger over time.
When the three most powerful Hindu gods—Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva—saw this situation, they decided to unite and create the goddess Durga, who would be powerful and strong enough to defeat Mahishasura. Before going into battle with Mahishasura, the gods bestowed numerous weapons on Goddess Durga.
For ten days, the demon fought Goddess Durga. These ten days were extremely trying for Goddess Durga. During this time, Mahishasura was constantly changing his form in order to deceive the goddess Durga. Goddess Durga was able to win him over when he finally transformed into a buffalo. As a result, Goddess Durga defeated Mahishasura and triumphed over the demons in this manner.
Some devotees also fast during the nine days of Navratri. During the festivities, there is also a lot of Garba dancing! During Navratri, some people also perform Dandiya Raas. Everyone, from elders to children, celebrates Navratri with joy and excitement.
