The ongoing nine-day Navratri festival is being celebrated with great fanfare across the country. During this time, Maa Durga devotees worship her nine avatars, also known as Navdurgas.
Goddess Shakti devotees worship Maa Katyayani on the sixth day of Navratri.
Who is Maa Katyayani?
Maa Katyayani is regarded as one of Goddess Durga’s most violent manifestations. Because the Goddess killed the demon king Mahishasura, she is known as Mahishasurmardini. She is depicted riding a lion with four hands holding a lotus flower and sword on the left side and Abhaya and Varada Mudras on the right. Maa Katyayani is thought to be the destroyer of evil.
According to the Vamana Purana, Maa Katyayani was created from the combined energies of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and other Gods after they were enraged by the demon Mahishasura and his wrongdoings. They manifested their rage as energy rays, which crystallized in Katyayana Rishi’s hermitage and were then given proper form. This is why this form of Maa Durga is also known as Katyayani, or Katyayana’s daughter.
Rishi Katyayana was an ardent devotee of Goddess Shakti, according to mythology texts. Goddess Durga granted his wish of becoming a father to Maa Durga after being impressed by his devotion and adoration. She became his daughter, grew up to be strong, beautiful, and a skilled fighter, and then killed Mahishasura.
