On Thursday, 13 candidates, including nominees from the ruling BJD, the opposition BJP, and the Congress, filed nominations for the December 5 by-election to the Padampur assembly constituency in Odisha.
The deadline for filing nominations was November 17.
“The nomination filing process was completed today, and 13 people, including political party nominees, filed their nominations,” said Bargarh Collector Monisha Banerjee.
Barsha Singh Bariha of the BJD, Pradeep Purohit of the BJP, and Satya Bhushan Sahu of the Congress have all filed nominations for the by-election.
When the candidates submitted their papers to the returning officer, senior leaders from the three political parties were present.
Although the nomination period began on November 10, no candidates filed papers until Wednesday evening because agitating farmers from the subdivision had been staging a dharna in front of the office since November 1.
They are demanding crop insurance and input subsidies. Farmers had asked political parties not to file papers until their issues were resolved. They also prevented Purohit, the BJP’s nominee, from filing his nomination on November 14.
The nominations will be scrutinized on November 18, and the deadline for withdrawal of candidature is November 21.
The voting will take place on December 5 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the counting of votes and declaration of results will take place on December 10.
The by-election was called after BJD MLA Bijaya Ranjan Singh Bariha died on October 3.
