The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) held a preparatory meeting today to deal with the upcoming summer heatwave.
The preparatory meeting was presided over by Mayor Sulochana Das. BMC Commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange and other senior civic officials attended the meeting and deliberated on an action plan to combat the heatwave in the capital city.
Officials analyzed IMD data from the city’s highest maximum temperature recorded in the summer season for the previous two years to devise a strategy to manage the situation this year.
Notably, the capital city experienced the highest temperature of 43.3 degrees Celsius on April 24 of last year, and the highest temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius on March 31 of this year.
“The Mayor asked the officials concerned to take the necessary steps for setting up of water kiosks in the city ahead of the advent of the summer. She also directed the officials to repair the defunct water ATMs. The health officials were directed to make necessary arrangements to treat sunstroke victims,” said an official.
The BMC Commissioner directed the officials to prepare department-wise plans to deal with the heatwave condition.
“The BMC will issue an SOP for common people as well as daily workers after receiving the department-wise plans. The women SHGs and social outfits to be roped in to create awareness among the city residents,” added the official.
The civic authorities will also take the help of mainstream media and social media to make people aware of the precautionary measures to fight heatwave condition.
“The BMC may form a special team to check food and water quality at various places in the city in the upcoming summer,” said the official.
It is worth mentioning here that the city recorded a maximum temperature of 34.4 degree Celsius, about 3 degrees above the normal, on Tuesday.
