Today, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik assessed the state of the Bhubaneswar Metro project’s Phase I. Additionally, the Odisha government has authorized the Detailed Project Report (DPR) at a total cost of Rs 5929 Crore, which it will fully fund. This marks a significant step towards the realization of this vital urban infrastructure.
It will be implemented as part of the State government’s 5T plan. The Supplementary Budget includes Rs 210 crore for the current fiscal year.
On January 1, 2024, the Chief Minister will lay the groundwork for the project.
The Government of Odisha has freshly established the ‘Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation’ as a wholly owned subsidiary under the Companies Act, and it has commenced operations.
The Development Commissioner-cum-ACS is chairing a High-Level Committee formed to oversee the rapid selection of an executing agency for the project.
The Metro project will elevate the entire path, running from Trisulia Square to Bhubaneswar Airport, along the median/side of existing roadways, and it will have 20 stations.
The stations will serve vital areas such as Nandankanan, KIIT Square, Damana Square, Jaydev Vihar, and Vani Vihar. Ram Mandir, Bhubaneswar Railway Station, Bapuji Nagar, Sishu Bhawan, and Capital Hospital are also nearby attractions.
They will soon commence the construction of the project and aim to complete it within 48 months. CM Patnaik asked all authorities to work closely together to guarantee the project’s prompt completion.
Patnaik said, “The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project is a major landmark project for Odisha. Bhubaneswar will join the select group of top cities in the country with a metro rail system. This project will further strengthen the public transport in the city and enable the economic growth of the city.
The city’s various urban projects have gained recognition, and it is emerging as a city with an enhanced quality of life. I am sure this mega project will make Bhubaneswar as a top liveable city in the country”.
The Secretary to the Chief Minister (5T) informed the Chief Minister about the alignment decision. This decision was reached after thorough field inspections. They specifically chose the route to alleviate congestion on major roadways and to benefit the largest number of daily commuters.
He further stated that the Metro project’s succeeding phases will connect other growing centers in and around Bhubaneswar.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Usha Devi, Development Commissioner Anu Garg, Principal Secretary HUD Mathivathanan, and senior officials attended the meeting.
